Lesson 23: The People in My Neighbourhood

As we know, the people in your community play an integral role in our lives. Understanding them gives us insights and connects us with the people around us.

What information do you have about the people in your neighborhood? How many different job roles can you identify?

Understanding is a fundamental aspect of knowledge, both "know" and "know about" indicating different levels of comprehension. One knows oneself through personal experiences, while knowing about someone else involves a broader perspective.

I, for one, live in Canada but sometimes miss the community I had in London.

Miss is a versatile word with various uses. It can mean "to lose or miss out on something" as a verb, or "to think of or remember" as a verb with a different context. For instance, "I missed my flight" means I lost or failed to catch the flight, while "I often miss my old friends" suggests I often think of or remember my old friends. It can also be used to express a sentiment of longing for something or someone, such as "I miss studying with you."

In my community, I did an interesting project last year. It was a fun way to engage with my neighbors and learn more about them.

Our teacher assigned us the task of interviewing people about their jobs. This not only gave us an insight into their lives but also made us learn more about our own community.

.1 Asking someone to do something is expressed as "ask sb. to do sth." For example, "Our teacher asked us to interview people about their jobs."

.2 An interview can be a process of questioning someone about certain topics, such as "interviewing someone about a subject" or "interviewing for a job." It's also a way to gather information or experience.

After some planning, I took a walk down the main shopping street in my neighborhood. It's a place where I can observe and interact with people from different walks of life.

.1 Going for a walk is a great way to explore and enjoy the community around you. "Down" is often used to indicate a specific direction or path, such as "go for a walk down the street."

My first stop was at Mr. Green's tailor shop where I met him fi a pair of pants while still answering my questions.

He was busy repairing a pair of pants but not too busy to answer my questions. The use of phrases like "be busy doing sth." and "be busy with sth." are common expressions to describe someone's occupation or activity. Fi or repairing something is often done by skilled professionals like Mr. Green.

Mr. Green enjoys his work as a tailor and meets new people and old friends every day. This gives him a sense of fulfillment and joy in his work.

I meet new people every day in my community and get to know them through conversations and interactions. It's always enjoyable to see old friends and meet new ones too.

The job he does sounds enjoyable because of the variety of tasks he encounters every day and the interactions with people. To sound like an idea is expressed as "sound like," which is often used to describe the impression or feeling one gets from something or someone. An enjoyable job would be one that not only pays well but also provides satisfaction and happiness.

My next stop was at Ms. King's bakery where the atmosphere was warm and filled with yummy treats. The word "full of" is used to describe something that is abundant or filled with something specific, such as being full of joy or happiness. Yummy is an adjective that describes something that tastes delicious or pleasing to the taste.

Ms. King rises early every day at 5:30 a.m. to prepare bread for her customers, who enjoy her delicious treats at her bakery shop. She rises up to prepare food on a regular basis for customers' readiness which suggests her diligence and hardworking nature as a baker who strives for providing customers with best products ready by 7:00 a.m..

The use of the phrase "be ready" can mean being prepared for something or ready to do something. For example, it can refer to food being ready for consumption or to an individual being ready for an activity. Here, it means that Ms King is diligent in her work and ensures that her bread is ready for customers by 7:00 a.m., indicating her commitment and dedication to her craft.
